AI Face Search vs Background Check Services: When to Use Each

AI face search and background check services are sometimes confused, but they solve fundamentally different problems. Understanding what each does best helps you choose the right tool for your verification needs.

What AI Face Search Does

Face search answers the question: "Where does this face appear online?" It finds social media profiles, news mentions, public directories, and forum posts containing a specific face. It's fast (results in seconds), requires no personally identifying information beyond a photo, and covers the open web comprehensively. It's primarily useful for verifying photo identity — confirming that someone's profile photo matches their claimed identity, or finding where a face appears.

What Background Check Services Do

Background check services (Spokeo, Intelius, BeenVerified, etc.) aggregate personal records — addresses, phone numbers, criminal records, employment history, financial records — into a searchable profile. They typically require a name, address, or phone number to search, not a photo. They're useful for verifying biographical claims about someone whose identity you already know.

Key Differences

Starting point: Face search starts from a photo. Background checks start from personal information.

Output: Face search returns social media presences and online appearances. Background checks return personal records and history.

FCRA compliance: Background check services used for employment, credit, or housing decisions must be FCRA-compliant. Face search is not designed for these regulated purposes.

Speed: Face search returns results instantly. Background checks may take minutes to aggregate.

Using Both Together

For comprehensive identity verification: start with a face search on FaceHunterAI to verify the photo and find social media presence. If you find a name and other details through the face search, use a background check service to verify biographical claims. This two-stage approach gives you both photo verification and records verification.
